Miscellaneous

On this page, you will find some miscellaneous information about travel, and our trip.  Look for articles and information that may help make your travellers's trip even bettter.

Rick Steeves is a former teacher, and experienced European traveller.  He has a tv show on PBS called Rick Steeves' Europe.  He literally writes the book on European travel, spend several months each year creating his show and writing travel guides for European cities.  Follow this link to get some packing tips and other tips for European Travel.

Here is another site, called the Saavy Backpacker.  Although we will not be backpacking through Europe, this site has some good resources.  This is a link to a page (with additional links) called Europe packing list.  Backpackers tend to travel light, so this sight may help to minimize the load our travellers will need to lug around.  Remember, there won't always be elevators, and travellers carry their own luggage.

Not that we want to scare anyone, but we do wan't our travellers to have the safest experience possible.  This is an article, again from Rick Steeves, on some tips to keep safe from theft and some of the tourist scams that happen in Europe.  Some of the scams will not apply (ie, avoiding taxi scams, or avoiding rental car scams), but you should take note that Rick does an article on travelling with a money belt (waist safe).  We have been stressing this from the outset.

The question of money use in Europe has come up a few times in the halls here at the school.  As a result, I am posting an article from the saavy backpacker, on using money in Europe.  It covers cash, credit and debit cards, as well as some less used money mediums.

As a supplement to the previous article, I am including a forum for Canadians on debit card use in Europe.  We still endorse students bringing cash, keeping it in their waist safe (which should be on their person) at all times, and having some form of plastic as a backup only.  As an additional bonus, follow this link to Rick Steeve's Europe: Travel Tips web page.

Here is a link to the Veterans Affairs Canada site, where they are displaying information about the ceremony at Vimy Ridge.  Click the link, and scroll down.  You will see plenty of information about events and activities.  You will want to find the section titled "Canadian National Vimy Memorial Site".

Many students have been asking about luggage at the airport.  Here are a few links (below) that will give information about what can go into checked luggage, versus carry on. CATSA is the Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority.

As we are travelling in a large group, and many of our students are not experienced with airport security, I have attached a few links to articles that I feel can benefit the students as they travel through the airport.  Please review these, or have your student review these before leaving, to help ease us through the airport.
